Generally, owners occupying a dwelling may obtain permits and do construction work.  Licenses are required for all residential building contractors and residential re-modelers who contract with a homeowner to construct or improve dwelling. Owners working on their own property must also be licensed if they build or remodel for the sole purpose of speculation or resale.

Quick Tips

The application for permit now has the typical fee on it to make it easy to figure out those smaller projects around the house.  So, on the application sheet make a check mark or X on your project fee when you fill it out. 

If you are a contractor who is located away from Chisholm, and you want to save on gas and a trip to Chisholm, you can fill out the application and send it with your check to:  Building Safety, 316 West Lake Street, Chisholm MN, 55719.

On large projects call the Building Safety Office in Chisholm, at 218-254-7906 to work out details on project reviews for code compliance, directions on how to complete the application, and direction on permits and fee's.

*Remember: It is a State Law that permits are required before beginning your project.  Fee's double when applying for a permit after your project has started.
